Physical Description1 file.
Note:This file contains articles and materials about the Watkins Elm historical marker, and the Samuel M. Watkins (1826-1920) family, including his third wife, Sophia Erkel Watkins (1852-1931), Dr. Ralph J. Watkins, an economist that lived in Cairo for many years, James C. Watkins who was Hays County Judge from 1855-1966, and Jennie Watkins Tuttle. Samuel was a member of Terry's Texas Rangers. Also included is the documentation for the Texas Historical Commission's designation, including Tula's research paper. This tree was preserved in the parking lot of the then Safeway at the corner of Hopkins and Comanche (in 2016 it is the "Little HEB") after the Watkins' home was razed to build the grocery story. The tree died in 1973, just after the plaque's dedication.
Note:Various photos and the research paper are digitized, and may be found with the links, below.
Note:In 2016 the marker is missing.
