Note:Original film was released by Ufa in Germany in 1927 per G. Lamprecht, Deutsche Stummfilme, v. 8, p. 821. Paramount cut 50 minutes from the original 140 minute length for its 1927 American release version per Los Angeles times, 5/10/84, p. 4.

Note:In 2020 A.D., Metropolis is coldly ruled by Joh Fredersen. A small privileged class frolics above ground while the oppressed mass of workers toil below ground. Freder, son of Joh, falls in love with the saintly Maria, a young lower-class woman who preaches secretly to the workers. Metropolis is nearly destroyed when Joh's attempt to use a robot bearing the likeness of Maria backfires and the nihilistic robot incites the workers to violence.
