Note:From Mr. Walker's introduction: "Shortly after moving to San Marcos, Texas in 2012 I noticed an odd feature one building off the square downtown [251 N. Guadalupe], a large skylight facing the north adorned the back of a merchant's brick building from the turn of the century. As a photographer, I recognized this as a "northlight," a common feature of artists' studios everywhere. A northlight gives indirect, soft controlled light for a subject, and has been used by artists such as Johannes Vermeer and Rembrandt van Rijn to produce a pleasing light for portraits. Predating electrical lighting for photography, I wondered who used this studio and how far back the history could be traced of the portrait artists who plied their trade here as the city grew into the 20th century alongside the university. Researching the,history of this building, I learned that it was the second studio of George K. Miller, built circa 1914 and taken over in 1916 by Margaret Brown, his apprentice. It's likely his first studio was bought from the departing Arthur Conrads of New Braunfels who worked San Marcos in 1905 as he began to establish his career, in the building that now holds "The Hub," a bicycle shop. By researching further back into the history of businesses on the town square I came to find stories of itinerant frontier photographers who also had a photo studios - now gone - near the square in the 1880s and 1890s."
