Note:Handwritten note accompanying photo: "This beautiful picture of the San Marcos River was probably taken in 1884 or 1885. Mr. Tom Code, on coming to San Marcos in 1883 as proprietor and miller of the San Marcos Mill was so entranced by the beauty of the river that he advertised it by word of mouth and pen from Ottawa, Canada, to Mexico City. He had a number of row boats which were constantly in use in showing off the beauties of the river. This picture probably was taken by Oliver Cosby, photographer for the Hays County Times."
