Neither of these notes are attached to the photo--but they appear to have been attached at some point. On the back of the reprinted photo, it says "Black Pipe Mill, 1888."

Note:2021 update: Scholars at Texas State believe this is actually a photo from the Spring Lake dam, not Rio Vista. The footprint appear to conform to a structure on an early Sanborn map at the Spring Lake dam.
