Abstract 520    $aEach of the photos in the series has this legend: The San Marcos Sunday School Assembly and Summer Institute (The Texas Chautauqua) was organized June 10th, 1885, and was chartered by the State July 1st of the same year. The objects of the Assembly are thus named in it Charter: "To popularlize education, cultivate the social sympathies of the People of Texas, and furnish a Christian Summer Home for all." Its grounds, some forty acres in extent, donated by the citizens of San Marcos, are charmingly situated, and are being beautified and highly adorned. Tents and Cottages are being erected by those who wish to spend the summer at the delightful retreat. The sessions of the Assembly embrace the months of July and August of each year, during which time a varied and interesting programme consisting of lectures and addresses on religious, scientific and literary subjects is carried out. The month of July is devoded to Normal Schools and popular instruction in all departments of education. "The San Marcos Students' Union" was organized August 28, 1885. It is a "home school," prescribing a course of study for each day in the year, and covering a curriculum of four years. Its membership is already large. Rev. H.M. DuBose, of Houston, is the projector of this movement and the Superintendent of Instruction. Prof. J.E. Pritchett, of San Marcos, is President of the Board of Directors, and Judge Sterling Fisher, of the same place, is secretary of the Assembly.
